Wing Commander is the first game in a series of highly successful space combat simulators. The story takes place during a prolonged war between humanity and the lion-like Kilrathi. The player starts as a lowly pilot but gradually ranks up as the action intensifies. The game became wilidly popular for its in-depth plot and character interactions between missions -- while many other contemporary simulators only had either random scenarios or campaigns that railroaded the player along the plot.
The non-interactive DOS demo showcases core gameplay. In 1996, Wing Commander was re-released as a native Windows programme alongside the second game and Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger in a single collection called The Kilrathi Saga. The July 2000 PC Gamer cover disk featured this version of Wing Commander as a free gift to subscribers, and later a major Wing Commander fan site received permission to offer this version of the game as a free download (please see the links section below).
