Spielbeschreibung
Perestroika (also known as Toppler) is an arcade game written by young Soviet computer scientists on the eve of the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The instant cult classic throws the player in the shoes of a Soviet Democrat navigating the treacherous field of bills and acts, represented by a frog-like creature jumping from one lily to another before they disappear under water.
The goal of each level is to reach the coin in the upper right corner that represents improved quality of life. The player can also collect bonuses that look like marbles of different colours, but watch out for the red Bureaucrats that try to hinder the player.
Given the nature of Soviet copyright laws and software ownership regulations, Perestroika was never sold commercially, but became widespread through private copying, The main author of the game, Nikita Skripkin, later went on to create a successful game development company that he called NIKITA after himself, and released a commercial Windows-native version of Perestroika among other titles. It appears that the "shareware" versions of the DOS game found on BBS's and shovelware CDs were an unrelated person's attempt to cash in without the original authors' knowledge or consent.
