Spielbeschreibung

SPISPOPD (which stands for Smashing Pumpkins into Small Piles of Putrid Debris) is a Gauntlet-style overhead shooter with a Halloween theme. The player controls Bouapha, a bald man armed with a red hammer, who is sent to retrieve Earth's entire supply of candles stolen by pumpkins on the Halloween's eve.

The game is split into several episodes with different themes (future world, ice world, desert world, etc.), several levels each, but the objective is always to collect all candles before you can move on to the next level. Bouapha starts unarmed and must find red hammer powerups to gain a ranged attack by the way of throwing hammers. Picking more than one powerup means more hammers thrown in a single attack.

Just like in Gauntlet, the levels are filled with pumpkin generators that constantly spawn more pumpkins which will roam around and hurt the player on contact. Generators take a lot of hits to destroy, but it is wise to take them out before the level is swarming with pumpkins. Also like in Gauntlet, there are one-use keys which open doors (with the number of doors often greater than the number of available keys), and also sliding blocks, teleporters, conveyor belts and other contraptions that add a puzzle element to gameplay.

The title SPISPOPD originated as a joke in the DOOM Usenet group, when someone suggested that id Software give their next game a more long and boring title to avoid all the hype around DOOM. Soon other users started posting about the non-existent game called Smashing Pumpkins into Small Piles of Putrid Debris, adding more and more details about it. Apparently, Mike Hommel was inspired by the title and created a whole game around this concept.

SPISPOPD was originally sold as shareware, but eventually Mike Hommel made the full version available as a free download from his site.
